Crunchyroll’s New Years Resolution to go legit results in hilarious user drama

Crunchy Roll announced back in mid-November that it had partnered with TV Tokyo that it would be removing all user uploaded content and going legit.

An excerpt from the article since ANN seems to be down at the moment:

At the same time, Crunchyroll has agreed to remove all user-uploaded content on the site and only stream video which they have explicit distribution contracts with the content providers for. Currently Crunchyroll has deals with Toei Animation, Gonzo (which was revealed to have a 20% stake in Crunchyroll in recent financial reports), and a few other smaller content providers.

Edit: Huh, okay. That quote doesn’t seem to be from ANN. Can’t find source. Here’s an article that is on ANN:

On January 8, Crunchyroll will stop accepting user-submitted videos and other content from individuals, and only host videos approved by copyright holders. Gonzo and Toei Animation are two other major Japanese copyright holders of anime that decided to stream on Crunchyroll. ANN interviewed Crunchyroll founder Vu Nguyen in March.

The head guy of Crunchy, Shinji, did not announce this on Crunchy Roll at the same time as it was announced on ANN. In fact, he waited until 4 days before New Year to break the news:

We’ve made a lot of progress working with the publishers with some great shows coming in January (like Naruto Shippuden!! and many more), but there’s still more to do! And much of the user-uploaded fansubs have been holding us back because it doesn’t have the creator’s permission :( So for CR to really break through and stay around forever, we are going to have to stop user uploads and take down any unauthorized uploads.

And so, starting at midnight, Crunchy Roll began removing the user uploaded content and uploading the legit anime subtitles from companies:

Crunchyroll has just completed the first steps of its revolution by removing user-uploaded videos and replacing them with high quality professional videos directly from the show creators. We now have over 25 top-tier publishers providing over 130 titles and over a thousand episodes for cr! Check out our January lineup.

And the user reactions?

Omg everyone quit subbing ;_;

Many, many like these in the hilarious New Years thread on Crunchy’s forums. My favorite from the thread is how a guy keeps linking Getfansub Wiki yet everyone ignores him.

There is probably something to be said about Shinji’s decision to let the public who visits ANN and such in on it before his actual user base, and the ignorance of the user base in general as they are pretty dumb and think Crunchy is the only place to get anime, but it’s New Years and I’m drinking so lets just sit back and laugh for now.

(Edit: Crunchy’s forums have no word or image posting limit. :ssh: )

  1. that fag sure got told

  2. best Christmas present

    wait…..

  3. I was gonna say, didn’t this come up ages ago that they were going ‘legit’ or something. I honestly don’t even have a clue what Crunchyroll is, is it some sort of service that streams anime or something?

  4. wow i lold heartily

holy shit are those people stupid or what

  5. Some of those people have never heard of tokyotosho.

    • Oh, but this are the people who can’t/don’t want to use BitTorrent because of excuses like “My internet connection sucks, so it would take forever to get one episode” or “I don’t have the hard-drive space to download episodes.”

The first one makes me really glad that I download 720p episodes in a few minutes (and I am clearly not the only one.), and the second one just baffles me because why don’t they download ONE EPISODE AT A TIME? And when they are done watching that episode, why don’t they, oh I don’t know, DELETE the episode to save space?

Oh well, gg 10/10 well played CR users and CR admin Shinj, you got bested by Schneizel. :D

      • Or they could just buy an external hard drive, as for the first simply patience.
But yeah, its kind of pathetic how they think that crunchyroll is the only place for anime.
On a completely unrelated note, I wonder if its possibe to post enough screenshots so that if you hold down the pg dn button, you could rick roll them without sound…

        • These people would rather waste money on some “premium” stream service instead of buying an external hard drive, or if they are old enough and can afford it, try to upgrade to a better ISP.

And that would be interesting to see, seeing how there is no word/image limit, but it requires :effort:, and I don’t know anyone who has that kind of will to do so.

Oh wait, 4chan has that, nevermind.

        • I can empathize with “connection sucks” reason for choosing to stream rather than download, because I’ve been there (it’s not only that downloads take forever, but also drops arbitrarily and you have to download from 0 again), but I soon found re-encoded 50mb mkv/mp4 to be the better option. Better quality than streams & small size easy on the connection AND hard drive.

      • Then there’s the excuse that stephyboorocks gave. Noobs always think torrent = virus.

      • There are those that live on campus and they’ll get yelled at for downloading fansubs every now and then. One of my favorite examples is a friend who was downloading Higurashi Kai, as it was airing, and a random company from Singapore or something sent a warning letter to his college so they cut his internet for a week and wouldn’t turn it back on till he went to some lecture over how downloading shit is illegal. He even tried to fight it since the company didn’t even have the rights to Kai, but the administration didn’t care.

Thankfully he learned his lesson and has since built a torrent box at his parent’s house and just downloads all his shit there then transfers it over when he feels like watching it. Sadly seeing as how these people think it’s a great idea to pay for streaming video, they may not be smart enough to figure these things out…

        • Singapore? I have a friend there who had his right to stay in campus dorm revoked due to being caught hosting XDCC server for anime.

  6. This only shows how dumb and ignorant can people be…

  7. Seeing CR fags (mostly lol 14/15 yo kids lolol) whining makes my day. HAPPY NEW YEAR LOL.

  8. I can relate to psyche510’s pain, as I’m also a fan of Shugo Chara, but I definitely can’t relate to her grammatical style.

  9. That poster is clearly not Schneizel. WAY too much effort

  10. I’d rather people not know about TokyoTosho, lest dumbfucks like these start talking about it and the site start getting C&D orders (cf. TVlinks)

  11. Nazarielle is right, that post does seem like a bit too much effort for Schneizel (bold and everything), but is it really wise to be telling the idiots who watch crunchyroll about how to get fansubs, which will create a huge wave of fucking idiots on sites and IRC channels?

  12. Schneizel’s account was just deleted

  13. As a fan that has never used crunchyroll and used Torrents exclusively for 4 years, the ignorance of these noobs is hilarious.

  14. I’d rather people like that disappear from the internet and oh I dunno, at least learn how to put a sentence together correctly before they start turning everything into the youtube userbase.

  15. Anime fans like that make me sick. They complain that the industry is out of touch and the current way of releasing series internationally takes too long. Then when the Japanese companies actually get off their asses and try to set up an infrastructure that will help them stay relevant with their younger, tech-inclined audience, that same audience bitches and moans because it’ll have to find another place to practice its hypocritical behavior. They SAY that they’re fans, but their habits aren’t helping the industry they claim to love. At all. Here they’re being presented with a convenient distribution system for their favorite shows that’s less expensive than buying DVDs and what do they do? Complain. Because it’s not free.

    *sigh*

Who am I kidding? Nothing I say will do any good. They’ll find whatever service they can to get all the entertainment they want and give nothing in return, all while acting like they’re somehow smarter or superior to fools like me who, you know, actually buy legit DVDs of the shows I enjoyed watching the fansubs of.

Fuck YOUR couch, bitchy users. Fuck your couch and get the hell away from my hobby, because you’re doing a grand total of NOTHING to help it.

    • Okay, so I actually WENT to Crunchyroll and it seems I made a slight error. They weren’t complaining about not being able to watch stuff for free–because you can still do that. And now they can do it legally, to boot. They were just complaining that they can’t get fansubs off it any more, so now they’re limited to the over 130 titles that companies provide.

      Over 130.

Excuse me while I punch a hole in a wall.

      • Haha. It’s really quite some mixture of entitlement and crying about free lunch.

      • good post, sums up how i feel about the issue. although i’m not usually inclined to support DRM, being able to watch a bunch of shows in decent quality video with subs an hour after airing, with a whole bunch more old shows available with subs as well, for just 8 dollars a month, seems pretty worthwhile to me. crunchyroll is off to a good start.

  16. oh man i use crunchyroll to get all my animus

  17. Anonymous bastard

    remember when crunchyroll was good?

  18. Yeah the whole not using torrents at universities sucks because I cant download entire seasons of anime, but i do enjoy being on internet 2.0 for wicked fast DDL or IRC

    • my internet speed at college is fucking fast

I miss it ;___; only reason I’m looking forward to the end of the holidays

  19. Hilarious shit, A++ will read again.

    *bookmarks*

  20. well even if torrent is stopped
there is always the IRC BOTSssssss which run at
    stable speed
i can watch 1 anime and dl one anime at the same time
i completed watching gundam 00 first season in this manner
    non stop watching wif dling

  21. Why are they complaining? The site where they like to watch there anime allows them to continue to view it for free legally! Face palm of the century…

  22. asddfsfd :Why are they complaining? The site where they like to watch there anime allows them to continue to view it for free legally! Face palm of the century…

One more thing! They still had to pay to download anime from crunchy roll when it was using fansubs. Shouldn’t they be happier that crunchy roll isn’t ripping them of by finally offering legitimate high quality downloads that they didn’t take from some one offering it for free? Gawd why are they so stupid?

  23. asddfsfd :Why are they complaining? The site where they like to watch there anime allows them to continue to view it for free legally! Face palm of the century…

although this is well said, for people who aren’t dumb or lame enough to value crunchyroll, this is a major inconvenience. i want to help the anime creators sure, the licensors maybe, but no matter how you look at it I am not interested in helping some company that puts itself before it’s users and uses silver-tongued nonsense to trick in the foolish. it doesn’t take a psychology degree to see when someone is clearly talking themselves up by downplaying all alternatives. and hence monopolies are created, and we all know what that means.
