The joys of softsubbing: Things I learned today

1) When you use Aegisub’s resample resolution, it will typically output things with decimals. \pos tags with decimals aren’t read by libass at all.

2) Libass and/or Freetype and/or [something] apparently has no glyph substitution. Instead, it will crash if the font doesn’t have a glyph.

3) Libass coding is very shitty. Too many overrides on one line, even if the line before it had more, can cause it to crash for some people. For others it will work perfectly fine… (Maybe it’s an update/build issue?)

4) The Schneizel Solution — “If there’s a problem, then blow it up” — is probably better than trying to actually fix something.

5) DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT MOTION TRACKING IN THE OPENING OR USING ORDERED CHAPTERS FOR A SHAFT SHOW. THEY LOVE CHANGING OPENINGS AND ENDINGS. D:

who cares about mplayer users, everyone knows directshow is the only way to watch anime.

  3. Who cares about libass users? Everyone Linuxy knows they should go hack on kumaji if they want subtitles.

  4. The core of this problem is rather that people use ancient builds of MPlayer with ancients x264 and libass. I have no problems with said file and I use MPlayer on it.

  5. I’m using MPlayer SVN 28238 in SMPlayer. Is that too old?

probably right though libass still hasn’t fixed \pos tags with decimal but neither versions of maria + holic crashed because I’m using a very late build of mplayer I compiled myself.

tip: If you’re using ubuntu do not use the repository version of mplayer because it’s a year old.

  7. I reported the \pos decimal bug to the mplayer dev team.
