A Guide to Karaoke Criticism

Various posts on AniDB and other places on the internet have made it very clear to me that people have no clue how to critique karaoke. I have made this guide in order to make sure that the internet properly criticizes the least important aspect of fansubbing.

Guidelines

First, we must understand that karaoke is optional. Yes, you heard me, transcribing and translating the songs is optional. Some songs are too hard to bother trying to work out so sometimes fansubbers just wait for the official lyrics to come out with the single before bothering. Alternatively, we just steal lyrics from NicoVideo. Fansubbers don’t have to do this and doing it should not somehow be relevant to whether you think a release is good or not. If you are about to seriously downvote or criticize a release for not including song translations and lyrics, you are a fucking idiot.

Second, we must understand that fansubbing in our community is from Japanese to English, but sometimes songs are in say Korean (Black Blood Brothers Ending) or French (Nodame Paris Ending). Unless the group members happen to speak that language or have friends who speak the language (or whatever), chances are this isn’t going to get translated. Fansubbers don’t have to do this and doing it should not somehow be relevant to whether you think a release is good or not. If you are about to seriously downvote or criticize a release for not including song translations and lyrics for a language that they don’t speak, you are a fucking idiot.

Third, we must understand that if a group does bother to do any karaoke, effects are optional. Yes, you heard me, making the syllables shit 50 thousand particles based on mathematical patterns and color changing through the whole fucking spectrum while shaking to every beat and/or guitar riff and then exploding into 50 thousand more particles is optional. Fansubbers don’t have to do this and doing it should not somehow be relevant to whether you think a release is good or not. If you are about to seriously downvote or criticize a release for not doing karaoke effects, or because their karaoke effects are lacking in comparison to other groups, you are a fucking idiot. Alternatively, if you are about to upvote or praise a release for having AWESUM!!11 karaoke effects, you are also a fucking idiot.

Fourth, we must understand that while people who actually sing along to romaji are gigantic faggots (IF YOU REALLY LIKED THE SONG, YOU’D MEMORIZE THE LYRICS), the supposed “point” of karaoke involves the viewer being able to read it. So universal no-no’s are things like the lyrics not being on-screen before they’re sung, not being able to read the lyrics very well due to a bad font choice or clashing/ugly colors, too distracting, etc. If you’re about to downvote or hate on a release because of stuff like that, I fully sympathize with you! But then again, karaoke is like the least pressing thing in a release – think twice before doing this! Also, there’s different levels of “eye fucking offensive”. In example, Frostii’s Sengoku Basara karaoke is very offensive but it’s not as bad as say… this.

Fifth, we must understand that the above points are not actually common sense/basic knowledge to people. (”People” includes fansubbers.)

Sixth, we must understand that I am being very ironic about a lot of this because I do karaoke and make pretty terrible looking shit and it’s all awesome.

Examples of karaoke

Here are some recent examples of fansub karaoke. With the above guidelines in mind, lets evaluate them!

anbu-cross-game

Here’s Anbu’s Cross Game opening. It’s hardsubbed. The border changes to orange when each syllable is sung then it changes back to the green color afterward. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes. Can it be seen as being offensive to your eyes in any way? No. Then 100% passing grade A++++.

Here’s AnY-Conclave’s Valkyria opening. It’s hardsubbed. The letters expand and the 2nd part of the song has particles flying out. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes. Can it be seen as being offensive to your eyes in any way? IT HAS FUCKING PARTICLES No. Also A++++ passing grade.

cf-phantom

Here’s Chibi-Formula’s Phantom opening. It’s softsubbed, no karaoke timing. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes. Can it be seen as being offensive to your eyes in any way? No. Once again, another A+++++ passing grade.

m33w-hanasakeru

In contrast, here’s m33w’s Hanasakeru Seishounen. Cool Qaulity guys. It’s softsubbed with the lyrics only. Is it translated? No. Is it legible? No, the font is fairly thin and has no border. F- for fucking failure, you faggots.

This is CoalGuys’ K-On opening. It’s softsubbed typesetroll karaoke made by yours truly. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes. Can it be seen as being offensive to your eyes in any way? Yes, the text appears fucking everywhere. Does everyone hate it? Apparently not. The troll is on me. (;´д⊂)

frostii-basara

This is Frostii’s Sengoku Basara opening. It’s hardsubbed AFX bullshit. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes… or, well, when the spears aren’t cutting the words, then yes it’s legible. Did the AFX user clearly go overboard? Yes. On the romaji we’ve got spears moving across cutting shit and on the kanji we’ve got swords cutting shit. Who the fuck let pichu the afx guy out of his pokeball.

ii-subs-sorakake

This is Il-Subs’ SoraKake Girl opening. Does not having karaoke there make me a very angry person? No. Is not having anything there better than some of the other crap that groups put out? Yes. A++++ good job guys!

Very disappointed in the fact that there’s no OP karaoke. Not because it is necessary or anything, but because it’s Frostii we’re talking about here, they are pretty much expected to have it there.

Very good release, no wonder of Eclipse.
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there f***ing karaoker is really lame! he does the same effects for every new release, not just that but also same colors and fonts (karaoke sux really)(same for Hayate 2nd)

Everything 10/10 except karaoke 0/10
Eclipse: you should really find another skilled karaoker

  1. I actually don’t like karaoke. I prefer the OP stay clean. But it’s not like I really give that much of a shit about it all, truthfully. Hell, most people just skip the OP / ED after the first few times (I’m one of those weirdos that always watches it).

    Though, there has been two times in all my anime watching history that I actually thought the karaoke was worthwhile. That was for Maria Holic and K-ON! Now, who was it that did those again…

      I also don’t like karaoke. Koda’s fourth point pretty much covers my reasons. You can’t actually sing along to karaoke in anime OPs since the lyrics, unlike in real karaoke, don’t appear early enough. Can’t sing along with it = Not real karaoke = Pointless = Get rid of it. Combine that with the annoying effect where the text disappears when it is sung (though thankfully, I haven’t seen that much of this recently) or overly gimmicky, sparkly distractions and together you have one large piece of shit.

      If a group insists on inserting karaoke, I’d greatly prefer that they be plain text or, at the very least, softsubs (so that people who don’t like them can turn them off).

      Also, no Japanese text please. If we are watching fansubs, we can’t read that shit anyway. Please keep the picture as free of text as possible, kthx.

      • Japanese text is useful for those of us who would like to insert OP/ED lyrics in our IM status messages in the original Japanese, I am guilty of this at least once.

        • I think lyric pages are more reliable for that!

  3. For Black Cat… uh, this was a very loooong while ago so I can’t remember the group, but the ED karaoke was absolutely awesome, and I always watched it because it made me smile. W/o the karaoke, the ED was pretty bland.

    Karaoke for old-school is acceptable because the shows themselves included the karaoke, presumably to help kids sing along. For this-gen anime, it’s not only completely unnecessary but also really, really funny. Just not intentionally.

    Except when someone subs an english song.

  12. I usually try to get a group who COMPLETELY softsubs. I don’t care about karaoke. In fact I even take the time to remove the karaoke with aegisub and remux it into the mkv. I’m so sorry I threw out all your hard work (I’m not really sorry because I don’t fucking care). I also still don’t understand fansubbers need to put english subtitles for the characters that speak coherent fucking english coughEdenOfTheEastcough. (I still hold hope that gg was just trolling with that…)

    • Not everyone who can read English (and watches English fansubs) can coherently speak/understand English too.

      Have you ever taken a foreign language? You will usually be able to read it better at first than you will be able to decipher it from ear. IE: I can read Japanese much better than I can understand it audibly.

      • I understand written English better than spoken English, but it’s not the same for Japanese (at least for me). I guess that’s mostly because I’ve never had to write or read any Japanese evah, but instead have heard thousands of hours of it.

    I don’t usually judge fansub groups based just on karaoke. I immediately assume they’ve hired a complete idiot responsible for this and just… move on. Whenever I want a clean OP sequence I just download RAW episode (yay for bandwidth these days). But if it’s softsubbed then I don’t care about it AT ALL. Particles, retarded colors and effects, text appears fucking everywhere coughcough(´∀`)cough – I don’t give a damn.

    Anyway, it was a nice guide, I’m happy to announce that I’m not a fucking idiot (yet) and OtaKing would be proud of your rant.

    Then I found out there’s people who release fansubs with fabulous dialogues (not notes, nor signs, dialogues). That’s when I realised fabulous karaoke isn’t that bad compared to fabulous dialogues. :<

    • The subs obviously have to contain as much emotion and energy as the characters in the show. If their attack is going to split the world in two, so should the subtitles!

      • Everyone has to admit that Black-Order’s TTGL subs wouldn’t have been the same without the fuckawesome GIGA DRILL BREAKER text effects.

        That shit isn’t fabulous, it’s fansubbing that would pierce the heavens.

    • The best is when the subs for every single character has it’s own matching colour, (like bright pink for the pink haired one).It’s even better when the subs consist of just an outline and the font is transparent in the middle. Really easy on the eyes, AND the subs for each character has it’s own matching colour (very light shades, those are the most stylish).

    • It still is, just sometimes they split them over 2 volumes or don’t include them until the end of the 13-episode arc. Sometimes they also don’t report them on the websites but it still might be listed on the back cover (obvious racism is obvious, they want to make sure gaijin can’t get their hands on those extras without pain of wasting bandwidth or having friends)

    Fansubbers listen to their fans to some extent and there has been no positive feedback for having softsub kara. Only negative feedbacks for having no kara effects. (inb4 fuck the viewers)

    • I like softsub karaoke and not just because gg does it. I wish every group did it. I like the ability to be able to just enjoy the opening. Softsub karaoke doesn’t have to be ugly either just look at coalguys kara for toradora’s second opening and even gg’s Eden of the East karaoke. (I don’t actually like m+h’s or K-on’s they’re great trolls though). I don’t understand why people still cling to hardsubbed karaoke.

      Also no one should pay attention to anidb’s ratings for fansub groups…

  36. As a karaoke subber myself (though I’m not good at all and I can’t do AFX for shit) I really try to focus on the point that the lyrics need to be legible no matter what the effect is. Since I’m half blind as it is, it’s quite a huge problem when the text itself is hard to read over the video. I also hate it when karaoke effects go overboard and take up half the screen…when the new karaoke guy for Abyssal Chronicles showed up for Tales of the Abyss and redid all the effects *sobs for wasting time designing the effects and timing the freaking long OP* I had to comment that his preliminary effect designs were waaaaay too flashy and overbearing. Thankfully, we met at a nice middle ground and ended up with fitting effects~

    The effects themselves should not overpower the actual OP/ED and must not have overly distracting effects that make the text illegible. Nice simple softsub lyrics or no karaoke at all works fine too…

  43. In spite of 1. people skipping OPs/EDs or 2. people hating karaoke period, I didn’t stop doing my own karas. I changed my timing style with each project, spending less time syl-timing and more on readability (Yes, having the text appear before it’s sung, scene-timing where it’s not a bitch, super-continuous lines etc.)

    So then Koda points out “IF YOU REALLY LIKED THE SONG, YOU’D MEMORIZE THE LYRICS” and I realize I’ve been shooting myself in the foot this whole time.

    No more aspiring to learn euro/koda-level kfx. It obviously takes too much EFFORT and experience with comp sci I obviously don’t have.

      If it has ANYTHING more than text on the screen, it is too complicated. You are not the animator here, and when you pretend to be you’re just distracting from the actual animation. Frankly, it’s kind of insulting to the creators of the show.

      • Bursting words are common and for one anime, don’t remember what, there was an actual ball jumping between the words! (Like the Disney sing along vids) It was covering up the credits! I was so annoyed! What was the translator thinking?!

        For a lot of anime there will be Japanese, plus English, plus Japanese written in the Latin alphabet (to subconsciously teach the language?), on all sides of the screen…and sometimes subber credits thrown in the gaps between the karaoke and the actual credits. It makes it look like the subbers have far too much time on their hands…

  50. Well, I don’t think this is the best place to be asking but I kind of feel creepy randomly PMing people I’ve never spoken more than 3 lines to after reading that they frequent other IRC networks from their blogs…

    Anyway, I’ve been working on karaoke effects for and older show for like 2 months now (like 5 minutes at a time before getting distracted). I’ve finally got something I’m happy with, but this post really making me think twice about it. I’d like some help either making it more fabulous or less of an eyesore. While to some extent I might feel a tad bit disappointed when there aren’t lyrics to a song that sounds really good, it is understandable that a group can’t/is too lazy to/fuck this do subs. And apparently I’ve not run into the worse kinds of shit, because I don’t think I’ve ever seen karaoke effects that just looked like shit… well, maybe once or twice, but then I just learn to skip the damn OP and watch good translating.
