Various posts on AniDB and other places on the internet have made it very clear to me that people have no clue how to critique karaoke. I have made this guide in order to make sure that the internet properly criticizes the least important aspect of fansubbing.
Guidelines
First, we must understand that karaoke is optional. Yes, you heard me, transcribing and translating the songs is optional. Some songs are too hard to bother trying to work out so sometimes fansubbers just wait for the official lyrics to come out with the single before bothering. Alternatively, we just steal lyrics from NicoVideo. Fansubbers don’t have to do this and doing it should not somehow be relevant to whether you think a release is good or not. If you are about to seriously downvote or criticize a release for not including song translations and lyrics, you are a fucking idiot.
Second, we must understand that fansubbing in our community is from Japanese to English, but sometimes songs are in say Korean (Black Blood Brothers Ending) or French (Nodame Paris Ending). Unless the group members happen to speak that language or have friends who speak the language (or whatever), chances are this isn’t going to get translated. Fansubbers don’t have to do this and doing it should not somehow be relevant to whether you think a release is good or not. If you are about to seriously downvote or criticize a release for not including song translations and lyrics for a language that they don’t speak, you are a fucking idiot.
Third, we must understand that if a group does bother to do any karaoke, effects are optional. Yes, you heard me, making the syllables shit 50 thousand particles based on mathematical patterns and color changing through the whole fucking spectrum while shaking to every beat and/or guitar riff and then exploding into 50 thousand more particles is optional. Fansubbers don’t have to do this and doing it should not somehow be relevant to whether you think a release is good or not. If you are about to seriously downvote or criticize a release for not doing karaoke effects, or because their karaoke effects are lacking in comparison to other groups, you are a fucking idiot. Alternatively, if you are about to upvote or praise a release for having AWESUM!!11 karaoke effects, you are also a fucking idiot.
Fourth, we must understand that while people who actually sing along to romaji are gigantic faggots (IF YOU REALLY LIKED THE SONG, YOU’D MEMORIZE THE LYRICS), the supposed “point” of karaoke involves the viewer being able to read it. So universal no-no’s are things like the lyrics not being on-screen before they’re sung, not being able to read the lyrics very well due to a bad font choice or clashing/ugly colors, too distracting, etc. If you’re about to downvote or hate on a release because of stuff like that, I fully sympathize with you! But then again, karaoke is like the least pressing thing in a release – think twice before doing this! Also, there’s different levels of “eye fucking offensive”. In example, Frostii’s Sengoku Basara karaoke is very offensive but it’s not as bad as say… this.
Fifth, we must understand that the above points are not actually common sense/basic knowledge to people. (”People” includes fansubbers.)
Sixth, we must understand that I am being very ironic about a lot of this because I do karaoke and make pretty terrible looking shit and it’s all awesome.
Examples of karaoke
Here are some recent examples of fansub karaoke. With the above guidelines in mind, lets evaluate them!
Here’s Anbu’s Cross Game opening. It’s hardsubbed. The border changes to orange when each syllable is sung then it changes back to the green color afterward. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes. Can it be seen as being offensive to your eyes in any way? No. Then 100% passing grade A++++.
Here’s AnY-Conclave’s Valkyria opening. It’s hardsubbed. The letters expand and the 2nd part of the song has particles flying out. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes. Can it be seen as being offensive to your eyes in any way? IT HAS FUCKING PARTICLES No. Also A++++ passing grade.
Here’s Chibi-Formula’s Phantom opening. It’s softsubbed, no karaoke timing. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes. Can it be seen as being offensive to your eyes in any way? No. Once again, another A+++++ passing grade.
In contrast, here’s m33w’s Hanasakeru Seishounen. Cool Qaulity guys. It’s softsubbed with the lyrics only. Is it translated? No. Is it legible? No, the font is fairly thin and has no border. F- for fucking failure, you faggots.
This is CoalGuys’ K-On opening. It’s softsubbed typesetroll karaoke made by yours truly. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes. Can it be seen as being offensive to your eyes in any way? Yes, the text appears fucking everywhere. Does everyone hate it? Apparently not. The troll is on me. (;´д⊂)
This is Frostii’s Sengoku Basara opening. It’s hardsubbed AFX bullshit. Is it translated? Yes. Is it legible? Yes… or, well, when the spears aren’t cutting the words, then yes it’s legible. Did the AFX user clearly go overboard? Yes. On the romaji we’ve got spears moving across cutting shit and on the kanji we’ve got swords cutting shit. Who the fuck let pichu the afx guy out of his pokeball.
This is Il-Subs’ SoraKake Girl opening. Does not having karaoke there make me a very angry person? No. Is not having anything there better than some of the other crap that groups put out? Yes. A++++ good job guys!
Examples of completely retarded comments made about karaoke
Don’t end up like these people!
megajapan on Frostii’s Eden of the East opening:
Very disappointed in the fact that there’s no OP karaoke. Not because it is necessary or anything, but because it’s Frostii we’re talking about here, they are pretty much expected to have it there.
There are lots of choices for this anime though, I’ll be looking elsewhere, kthx.
Gz Frostii, you suck because you didn’t sub an English song.
riggs on Eclipse’s Fullmetal Alchemist:
Very good release, no wonder of Eclipse.
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there f***ing karaoker is really lame! he does the same effects for every new release, not just that but also same colors and fonts (karaoke sux really)(same for Hayate 2nd)My rate:
Everything 10/10 except karaoke 0/10
Eclipse: you should really find another skilled karaoker
All karaoke is timed and has letters. It’s all the same.
Dominic White on gg’s Maria+Holic opening:
It really is. Perfectly in keeping with the OP, too. Truly above and beyond the call of fansubbing duty.
THE CALL OF FANSUBBING DUTY.
r3hpyc on THORA’s Gundam 00 BD’s:
yup TSr of menclave is pretty gud, but this group’s tsr is not as good as menclave. also the karas of this group is inferior which makes the whole rls lower eventhough the video quality is good.
If your karaoke is inferior to Menclave’s, your whole release is.
gam3szz on Taka’s Fullmetal Alchemist:
Taka’s karaoke on the OP and ED was the best of all the groups..
I always watched it..
Damn you FUNimation!
Omg Funimation don’t C+D Taka! They had the best karaoke! ;_;
tl;dr
Fansubbing is fucking dumb.

I actually don’t like karaoke. I prefer the OP stay clean. But it’s not like I really give that much of a shit about it all, truthfully. Hell, most people just skip the OP / ED after the first few times (I’m one of those weirdos that always watches it).
Though, there has been two times in all my anime watching history that I actually thought the karaoke was worthwhile. That was for Maria Holic and K-ON! Now, who was it that did those again…
