My Top MMO’s of the Past Decade
3) City of Heroes/Villains
CoH is pretty much a gimmick game: You’re a super hero and you fight bad guys. It was WOAH DIFFERENT compared to the fantasy worlds as they tried to keep everything thematic and flavored. Once you get tired of the gimmick you’re pretty much done with the game, but it was mildly entertaining until I got to that point. City of Villains had the same gimmick shine to it. I made a super villain and controlled robots. Controlling robots sounded cool at the time, but really, it’s the same as pets and summoning.
2) Phantasy Star Online
I think PSO was my first online game. There was I in middle school on my Dreamcast on a 56k connection rockin’ it up on a FOmarl with people from the now defunct Gaming Intelligence Agency. Some guy gave me a bazooka, so I was a human female in a long white dress with a bazooka. I still love the Mines boss theme. Fuck I remember watching some YTMND before and it used the mines boss theme. I tried playing Blue Burst on that one private server before, but it just isn’t the same.
1) Ragnarok Online
Ragnarok Online is one of the shittiest MMORPG’s I have ever played in terms of functionality, yet best MMORPG I have ever played in terms of memorability. We were all bored high schoolers using our parents credit card to spend $8bux/month on this shitty 2d sprite game with MAGICAL 3D BACKGROUNDS where the only customization was our hair, hair color and hat and we collected every motherfucking hat we could. It’s only now that I can look back and seriously say that RO was a game about hats. The targeting system was complete shit, at level 96 you were 1/2 way to 99 in terms of EXP, shit breaks when you upgrade, quests were like “lolwut”, the errors and Engrish were all terribleNOMSG, but the community was “amazing”.
I remember the Lesbian Squad, the Crying Siam Face, Amaris getting grounded because Yuki’s guild took over her mom and dad’s fort, pulling Bushi around by the chain, the Cosby Kids, DUSTIN X CRYSTAL LOLOLOL, getting Crystal banned, Acucrack asking me where to buy birth control pills, Evergreen (fat white guy) joining the West Coast Asians guild, Aeris revealing himself as a guy and Acucrack ragequitting, etc etc. In a way, it’s like Ragnarok Online is comparable to how people from my generation watched Power Rangers on TV and we can talk to each other about wanting to play the Green Ranger on the playground. Many have played RO and hated it, yet we always have stories about it.
Basically
All MMO’s are fucking terrible. It’s always about the community and the drama paying money to look fabulous. (´ー`*)

That part about RO is too true, unfortunately. God I hate RO. 。・゚・(ノД`)・゚・。
